On September 2, 2023, India launched Aditya L1, its first solar mission, to learn more about the Sun and how it affects Earth. Aditya derives his name from Aditya, the Sun God in Hinduism.

What is Aditya L1?

The spacecraft Aditya L1 is scheduled to be deployed into a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth system's Lagrange point 1 (L1). Because of the equilibrium between the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Earth at L1, Aditya is able to maintain a steady orbit.

Studying the Sun's corona, or outermost layer of atmosphere, is the primary goal of Aditya L1. The corona is a dynamic, extremely hot region that is poorly understood. The instruments on Aditya L1:

Solar coronagraph: 

A coronagraph is an instrument used to investigate the weaker corona by filtering out the strong light from the Sun's disk.

Spectrograph: 

Splitting sunlight into its constituent wavelengths is what a spectrograph does. This makes it possible for researchers to examine the corona's chemical makeup.

Magnetograph:

 A magnetograph is a device that gauges the Sun's magnetic field. The relationships of the corona can be comprehended with the use of this knowledge.

1. Study the Sun's corona

It is extremely faint and extremely hot, with temperatures reaching millions of degrees Celsius, making it challenging to examine from Earth. Aditya is scheduled to carry several instruments, including as a magnetograph, spectrograph, and solar coronagraph, to study the corona.

2. Understand the Mechanisms of Coronal Heating

Although the Sun's corona is far hotter than its surface, the process underlying this heating is not entirely known. By examining the dynamics of the corona and the interplay between the magnetic field and plasma of the Sun, Aditya will aid scientists in their quest to unravel this mystery.

3. Investigate The Origin Of Solar Flares And Coronal Mass Ejections

The Sun can experience massive explosions called flares from the sun and coronal mass ejections.
