China Discovers New Lunar Mineral: A Major Breakthrough in Moon Exploration

Chinese scientists have recently made an extraordinary finding during their lunar mission, which has added to our knowledge of Earth's satellite. They have uncovered a new lunar mineral among the samples collected from the moon two years ago during the Chang'e-5 mission. This significant discovery, named Changesite-(Y), was found within particles of lunar basalt, hardened fragments of lava.

The announcement of this discovery was made last Friday and is linked to the ambitious Chang'e-5 mission. China became the first country in four decades to successfully retrieve lunar rocks and soil in December 2020, amassing several pounds of samples. The Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification, a body of the International Mineralogical Association, has confirmed Changesite-(Y) as a new mineral, as reported by the China National Space Administration.


Lunar samples are highly valuable for understanding the evolution of planets. James Head, a professor of geological sciences at Brown University, emphasized their significance. Previous analysis of samples collected by NASA during the Apollo missions and Luna robotic landers of the Soviet Union has provided insights into the moon's formation. These findings, combined with recent computer modeling, support the theory that the moon originated from the debris left by a collision between Earth and a Mars-sized celestial body.


NASA, through its six Apollo missions conducted between 1969 and 1972, amassed an impressive collection of 2,200 samples, weighing 382 kilograms in total. The agency continues to study these samples and has recently unsealed one in preparation for the upcoming Artemis missions. NASA stated that new samples collected from different moon locations will enhance our understanding of volatile reservoirs and the planet's geological evolution.

So far, lunar sampling has mainly focused on the central part of the near side of the moon, the hemisphere facing Earth. Clive Neal, a professor of planetary geology at the University of Notre Dame, noted that new mineral discoveries on the moon are not common. The first discovered was armalcolite, named after the three astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission.


Future missions, led by both China and the United States, aim to explore uncharted territories on the moon. Sampling from "other geologically interesting sites," particularly younger terrains, will contribute to expanding our understanding of lunar evolution, according to Professor Neal. The moon continues to reveal intriguing secrets, unveiling a world that is yet to be fully understood.
