Thomas embarked on a scientific study of rain's aroma, coining the term "petrichor" to describe this phenomenon. Derived from Greek roots meaning "stone" and "the blood of gods," petrichor refers to the distinctive smell of rain that permeates the air after a period of dryness.


Bear and Thomas discovered that one of the main contributors to this aromatic experience is a mixture of oils secreted by certain plants during arid periods. When rain finally arrives after a drought, these oils, which accumulate in rocks and soil, blend together and are released into the atmosphere. The scientists also noted that these oils inhibit seed germination, suggesting that plants produce them to reduce competition for limited water resources during dry spells.


The fragrance of rain is further enhanced by the combination of these airborne plant oils with other compounds. In forested areas, a common substance responsible for the smell is geosmin, a chemical produced by soil-dwelling bacteria known as actinomycetes. These bacteria secrete geosmin when they produce spores, which are then dispersed into the air by the impact of raindrops on the ground. The moisture in the air carries the geosmin molecules, conveying its distinct musky scent to our olfactory senses. Gardeners may also recognize this earthy aroma when turning over soil in their gardens.


Geosmin's intensity is most pronounced during the first rainfall following a dry period, as the soil accumulates a significant supply of spores. Studies have revealed that the human nose is remarkably sensitive to geosmin, with some individuals able to detect it at concentrations as low as 5 parts per trillion. Interestingly, geosmin is also responsible for the earthy taste found in beets.


Ozone (O3), a molecule consisting of three bonded oxygen atoms, also contributes to the scent of rain, particularly after thunderstorms. When lightning strikes, it can split oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere, leading to the formation of nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide then reacts with other chemicals present in the atmosphere, resulting in the production of ozone. In some cases, the presence of ozone can be detected in the air even before a storm arrives, as it can travel long distances from high altitudes. Ozone has a sharp scent reminiscent of chlorine.


While the specific chemicals involved in rain's fragrance are fascinating, there is a broader question of why we find the smell of rain so pleasant. Some scientists propose that it is a product of evolution. Anthropologist Diana Young, for instance, studied the culture of Western Australia's Pitjantjatjara people and found that they associate the smell of rain with the color green. This suggests a deep-rooted connection between the first rain of a season and the anticipation of growth and abundant game animals—essential resources for their diet. Young refers to this phenomenon as "cultural synesthesia," a blending of sensory experiences on a societal level influenced by evolutionary history.


It is reasonable to assume that other cultures may also have positive associations with the scent of rain ingrained in their collective consciousness. After all, humans around the world rely on plants and animals for sustenance, and both thrive during rainy periods more than in times of drought.
